Today was a hot muggy day in Delhi and call me crazy but I decided to hunt down the fabled Sharma Farms in Chhattarpur. There was a part of me that was not entirely convinced if this trip was going to be all that interesting! I was in for a surprise! Luckily, it was pretty easy to find and since it was a Saturday, the traffic was tolerable! The unassuming signage failed to impress me and gave me no indication of what lay behind the tall dusty white gate!
After entering the gate, we made a left turn on a small unpaved road and that's when I got a glimpse of what lay ahead! As the story goes, the owners of the farm have a passion for collecting antique furniture, artifacts and curios! With time, the collection grew so big that it started attracting more people. Lately, it has also been turned into a workshop where several skilled artisans work to create the furniture of your dreams.
My pictures do no justice to the vastness of the multiple warehouses on the farm. I walked down the endlessly long and confusing aisles with not a single sales person is sight! I checked at the office as it seemed almost eerie and I felt like a trespasser meandering around! I was informed that you are completely on your own. The way it works is that you click a picture on your phone and walk back to the office to show it to the staff and they will then tell you the price! Hmm... I wonder how it would work if you did not have a smart phone!!
Navigating this place is exciting, as at every turn you just might find that exotic piece of furniture or artifact of your dreams :) You need to have tonnes of patience and a cold bottle of water with you to navigate the long and narrow dusty aisles. There is colonial and traditional furniture, mixed in with art deco pieces. There are some pieces lying around that have a contemporary boho chic look. All the items have a vintage patina that is rather alluring. Many of the pieces are reproduced and re purposed and some can also be customized to suit your style and space!
I came away thrilled to have found this treasure trove:) The attitude of one of the ladies in the office had a lot to be desired. She could have been a bit more cordial to say the least!
I did not buy anything today...but I walked away from something that I just might go back and grab! Can you guess what it is ??
If you are in the Delhi area, do head to Sharma Farms to get your vintage fix :)
