Block Printing Finds: BLOCKWALLAH

I am venturing into my first block printing project and therefore a tad bit nervous :) I shall reveal what I am planning to do in a couple of days. It should be a fun project for me to do with my kids. While looking for blocks for the project I came across this wonderful store BLOCKWALLAH on Etsy. They have a lovely collection of blocks and with excellent reviews.  The store has a extensive collection of blocks. Some of the designs they have, are ones that I have not seen before!

Of course I have a weakness for the paisley pattern :)

A History Lesson and An Heirloom

I am a a history buff and I can research facts and figures quite happily for long periods of time :). My interest of course deepens when it involves researching the history of something that I own. My mother gave me these miniatures during my last trip to India. They were given to her by my paternal Grandparents. While I find them pretty, I simply had to know more :) While I was in India, we set about getting the old frame repaired and changed the fabric of the frame to a rich burgundy.  Now it sits pretty in my home back here in the States :)

A few days of online research led me to some amazing information. Its quite fascinating.........

" As the British East India Company expanded its purview in South Asia during the late 1700s, great numbers of its employees moved from England to carve out new lives for themselves in India. As they traveled through the country and encountered unusual flora and fauna, stunning ancient monuments, and exotic new people, they wanted to capture these images to send or take home. Whereas the modern tourist would rely on his camera for such a task, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century travelers had to hire Indian painters to do the job. The works produced by these artists, undertaken in a European style and palette, are known collectively as "Company" paintings. They are characterized in medium by the use of watercolors (instead of gouache), and in technique by the appearance of linear perspective and shading."

"This style of painting arose in a number of different cities. Delhi's market expanded after the city's occupation by the British in 1803. Its magnificent Mughal monuments were the most popular subjects, and its artists were unique in using ivory as a base for painting"

My oval frame has nine such miniatures! The work is intricate and absolutely beautiful!

My research also led me to various auction houses. I manged to find  a very similar piece at Bonhams, a prominent privately owned auction house based in UK.

There is a lot more information available online. However, for now, I have the information I need! I am delighted to have traced the origins of these miniatures :)

So are there any history buffs out there?  Do share your stories with me!

Visualize Delhi Posters

Its funny how a line or in this case a poster can jog a childhood memory :) The United States has been home for me for the past 14 years. However, before I moved here, I lived in New Delhi. A city that remains close to my heart and is home even today!

When I was in high school, we lived in the cantonment area in Delhi ( an army base) which was very much in the city. However it was next to a green belt called the Ridge. The auto drivers were never ready to go there because it was isolated. They had a hard time finding passengers on the return. A lot has changed now but those days this was very much the quieter part of the city!

The words in the first poster sounds so familiar as I have heard them often while trying to get an auto to take me home!  The driver would always say that the meter is not working, so the fare would have to be negotiated. It would always be higher than what you would normally pay! An easy way to make more money :)

These lovely minimalist Delhi posters have been designed by Delhi based designers/art directors, Samrat Ray and Abhishek Prasad and you can view the entire collection here!

Decor Restlessness :)

Happy Monday everyone!

I am a restless person when it comes to decor. If something is bothering me, I won't settle down till I fix it :) My home has evolved over the years and most of it feels comfortable.  I try not to mess with it :) However, for a while now, I have wanted something suitable as a coffee table for my living room. Its not a large space. Since I hate clutter, it took me a while to even think of placing a table in the room.  My parents bought me this Afghan rug last year and its my pride and joy. I did not want it hidden under a large bulky piece of furniture.

Today I am smiling as it all comes together. I have placed a small glass round table that displays the rug under it perfectly. The room looks light and airy which is a look I am constantly trying to achieve :) Striking a good balance between dressing up a room vs making it look like a museum is very important don't you think?

For all you decor enthusiasts out there, what are you striving to achieve in your home or are you there? Do share your thoughts!

A Home in an Eco Village in Brazil

Eco villages are areas that are concerned about the environment and social harmony. The owner of this sustainable home moved out of the big city and literally built her home in Brazil in an eco-village. It was built exactly the way she wanted it! In her words" she aspired to live a life in her in harmony with the planet".

I love the thought behind this home and also the pretty, relaxed vibe it exudes!

Hello

Hello there! Its Sunday night in my part of the world. I am finally relieved. My furniture is back in the house where it belongs and not in the garage!! The past three days my home has been upside down, as we worked on some home improvement projects. Our home is now 8 years old and badly in need of some tender loving care :) We still have lots to do, but we have made a beginning :) Today was Father's Day and we enjoyed some good old fashioned family time at home!

Here's wishing you a great week ahead. Stay tuned for exciting times at MDC!

Antique Store Junkie

I am a big fan of antique stores. The things you find at such stores may not always be in impeccable condition but that's fine by me :) I found this amber colored mid century lamp at an antique store close to home. The wiring needs a bit of work and there is a tiny scratch on the glass. However, I am not one to be disheartened easily:) The wiring is now in place and the scratch is hardly noticeable!

These pre-loved treasures can be pretty inexpensive if you know where to look! Sometimes you can get incredibly lucky and find something really striking. I was fortunate enough to find a pair of these lamps.....Yay!! They have now settled in beautifully into my home :) This is just a quick phone picture of the lamp, I will share more pictures later.

Are you an antique store junkie? What are some of the most amazing things you have found at antique stores and flea markets. I would love to know??

Keep on smiling and have a lovely day!

Home is Where The Story Begins

Home is where the story begins! These simple words speak to me and touch my heart! We all go crazy decorating our homes but in my opinion we are all weaving our own unique story! Or at least we should :) For an authentic decor experience remember to create your home first for yourself and your family and then for others. It is really not important how fancy or how simplistic your decor is. Ideally, it should only be about that warm fuzzy feeling that your home evokes for you at the end of a long day!

In my college days, I was extremely house proud of "my room" in my parents home :) So, I guess that is where it all began for me!! As a child we moved around a lot. We lived in little army towns where the homes ranged from really tiny spaces to rambling mansions. There were no home decor stores and most of the times the furniture came with the house :) However, despite the limitations, my mom always managed to create a warm and beautiful home for us.

Somehow, despite the fact that we moved houses every few years, I remember my home had a certain look that never changed. It was always warm and cozy with familiar things...... and a look and style that was all our own :) I have tried to do that in my home here as well. It tells our family story, it speaks of our personalities, our interests, our roots and it evolves as we grow.

I bought this delightful sign today and as it lay on my coffee table, I could not help taking pictures. The peonies too were just waiting to be clicked. As you can see, I went a bit crazy :)

Here's wishing you a great week ahead and remember to tell your story :) I would love to hear about it!

Furniture Hunting At Antique Stores

Do you have a favorite go to place to buy furniture? I used to frequent the regular furniture stores here in the States when I was setting up my first home in Atlanta! Off late that has changed for me. I hardly buy furniture now as I have no space nor the budget for it. However, I love browsing antique stores and sometimes you find things there that are hard to resist :)

A few years ago, I found this 19th century antique English Oak hutch at a local antique store. I fell in love with it. I knew instantly that it would fit the alcove in my foyer. What made it even better was the price tag! I bought it for 200 bucks which for something like this is a steal! Can you blame me :)

What about you? What kind of furniture are you drawn to? Do you have a special store you like to frequent?

Hello June and some Weekend Moments

June is off to a great start in my neck of the woods!! The days are filled with abundant sunshine and pretty wildflowers are in bloom wherever I look. My idea of a perfect weekend is going on a drive with my family. Today, we managed to steal away some time to do just that!

I took these pictures on the way to a Lake 45 mins away from home. I love living in the Pacific Northwest. Its truly gratifying to be in the midst of such natural beauty!

Driving around today, I was reminded of a quote by William Shakespeare "I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it.”

Here's wishing you a great week ahead!!
