Design Crush : Mathew Patrick Smyth

There are times when you are flipping through a design magazine and you glace at an image. You admire the style, smile and move on. Then there are times when you are bowled over and gaze at the image for ever and ever. Today, I had was one of those moment while browsing through the latest Elle Decor :)

The designer Mathew Patrick Smyth has very effectively used this larger than life image of an Indian lady while designing an apartment in Manhattan. The image that hangs on the wall is a photograph by Peter Margonelli. I love what the photographer has done with this image. The lovely lady from a bygone era adds the right amount of drama to this space :) Don't you think??
I am particularly attracted to this image because of my own fascination with black and white images. I have spent many years searching for pictures of my ancestors in my parents home. I have found frayed yet beautiful images of men and women in my family dressed up in traditional attire. I have a wall in my loft dedicated to family pictures that date back to the early 19th century. I can tell you that some of the images displayed on my wall very closely resemble this image :)
My wall of course is a collage of images. However, today I cannot look away from this larger than life image. I can see myself wanting to do something similar someday :) I am sure creating a photo work like this is no easy feat but then once I get an idea in my head......I have a hard time letting go :)

Here's wishing you a great week ahead. Have you had a design crush lately? Do share them with you, I would love to know :)
