Ojai Dreaming and Hello 2020

Happy 2020 guys. I am back :) Hope you had a good start to the year. As for me, 2019 ended on a good note with a short vacation to Southern California. 2020 on the other hand is off to a crazy busy start. However, that is a story for another day.....for now, lets look back as I relive my trip with you.

Sunshine, olives, lemon and orange groves......the Pacific ocean, stunning architecture and retail therapy....my SoCal trip had it all :) During the Christmas break we based ourselves in Ventura which is a delightful little town on the Pacific coast. A series of day trips from Ventura took us to some incredible places. I have to admit that while the coast was spectacular, my favorite place on this trip was Ojai.
Ojai is further inland and beautifully tucked in between mountains and amid fragrant orange groves.  It’s a miracle  how peaceful and bucolic this place can feel, despite it being so close to the Los Angeles metropolis area. Ojai has a Mediterranean air to it with a laid back vibe and somehow I instantly felt relaxed there. What really stood out for me is that the town of Ojai has absolutely no corporate chains. All the stores are local and everyone seems to know one other. Hiking is almost a religion here. We drove up to Meditation mount to look at the view and go for a short hike but they were closed at the time.
We really lucked out as we drove out of Ojai back to Ventura.  We got to see Ojai's famed sunset. The entire valley was bathed in a surreal pink hue and is often referred to Ojai's "pink moment"

One of my favorite stops in Ojai was at the Ojai Olive Oil Company. The main olive grove on the ranch was planted in the mid-1800s, back in the era of the Spanish Missions, when there was a communal olive press in the valley. We got a fascinating tour of how olive oil is made. Olive Oil is a third-generation family owned and operated organic and sustainable farm. Needless to say I came back laden with olive oils and some delightful olive oil cream.

At The Ojai Olive Oil Company....

Ojai Rotie is a French Lebanese style restaurant, we stopped for lunch here and loved the food.

Another fascinating stop in Ojai was Barts Book which is  the largest independently owned and operated outdoor bookstore in the United States.

In 1964 Bart’s Books was little more than a sparkle in the eye of Richard Bartinsdale whose collection of books had gotten so overwhelming that he constructed a series of book cases along the sidewalk so that passersby could peruse the titles. In lieu of a cash register, “Bart” left coffee cans atop the book cases. People would select a title or two and leave payment in the cans, giving birth to Bart’s world famous tradition of selling books via the honor system.
Since that time Bart’s Books has become host to nearly one million books ranging from the thirty-five cent specials which line the outside walls and are still for sale on the honor system, to rare, out of print first editions, and art books valued in the thousands of dollars. Nearly half a century after its inception, Bart’s Books continues to mystify patrons, journalists, and book lovers with a character and charm that beggars description and a selection of books that is beyond compare"
Fascinating right?

As for the lemon and orange groves around town. I could not get enough of it....

Orange groves.....I could spend a lifetime here....

Fall was lingering on in Ojai......it was a lovely sight.

Our last view of the Ojai valley as we drove back to Ventura......

Back in Ventura, the Pacific ocean was there to greet us.....

So if you make your way to Southern California make sure you say Hello to Ojai for me :) Keep on traveling......and see you around.

Jaipur Wanderings and Khatu Haveli

I am enjoying my summer break in India! Last year I made two attempts to drive down to Jaipur from Delhi. However, the torrential rain dashed my plans! This year, I was determined to make it there! With my mom as my guide ( she has become quite the local as my parents have been going for the Jaipur Literature Festival annually since its inception )  With one day and a night we had to achieve a lot! Armed with a list of shops to browse we were all set :) My aim primarily was to go treasure hunting for my little online boutique!!

We stayed away from the big bazaars and made it to a few select shops. Jaipur's chaotic traffic did not deter me, as we meandered through narrow lanes to find what we were looking for! I have to sheepishly admit that while linen and quilts were not on my agenda, I caved in and bought some gorgeous block printed textiles for my home.
An extremely interesting discovery was a store called Mangalam Arts! This place is an endless warehouse of arts and artifacts, colonial and period furniture, vintage prints and lighting and so much more!

Here are a few images......

Last, but certainly, not the least was an early morning visit to my parents friend's family home! Khatu Haveli is a beautifully restored heritage property inside the walled city and is a small boutique hotel! With courtyards and pretty arches this place is an absolute delight. Elegant furniture, carefully curated knick knacks and vintage family pictures add style and elegance to this lovely hotel! My favorite was the terrace which has the most amazing view of Nahargarh Fort! I saw it during the day, but the real drama is at night when the guests can sit beneath the stars and see the twinkling lights of the fort beyond.

For fans of the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, here is some interesting information! Inspired  by the movie, the BBC aired a three part documentary series  in the winter of 2016 which was filmed at Khatu Haveli. The filming took place in September 2015 when the cast of eight British celebrities stayed at the Haveli for three weeks. The cast were all senior citizens above the age of 65 with diverse professional backgrounds. They traveled to India to explore the possibility of settling in India post retirement. Fun...right??
After being telecast on BBC 2 as The Real Marigold Hotel the documentary series is now also known as “ The Indian Dream Hotel” and is being telecast in other countries. It is available on YouTube.

For me ,personally, Khatu Haveli is the ideal base to delve into the history and grandeur of Rajasthan. Here are some quick pictures of this lovely property! I have to thank Sushma Aunty and Amar Uncle for a lovely tour and a scrumptious breakfast :) It really was the highlight of my trip to Jaipur.

To know more about this heritage hotel find them here.

Keep on smiling and Travel on...

The Pretty Italian Parasol and a Little Girl :)

Hello there! I have been missing in action as its summer! I have slowed down too just like everything else :) Its been a couple of weeks of traveling and now I am home with my parents. En route, we made a brief stop in Italy. My son has been fascinated with Venice for a while and wanted to see it. Having been there before, hubby and I decided to do the trip just for him! There is something nice about going back to a place as there is no fixed agenda! For us, we enjoyed spending time doing absolutely nothing in the most pleasant way! It was truly La Dolce Vita :)

While walking around San Marco, my little one spotted this cream lace parasol and we bought it for her. She twirled it around with a spring in her step, as she discovered Venice and the islands of Murano and Burano! I followed her around clicking pictures and soon it became our thing :)

We were so fortunate that the days were filled with sunshine though the heat was sapping! My love affair with Italy continues.....as I yearn to be back every single day :)

My Happy Place : Hawaii

Its been a month since my last post and I apologize for not being around! This winter was a harsh one for the family. We were all down with the flu for a long, long time. A few unexpected, but happy, changes came about in my personal life. It was stressful for a while, but thankfully it has ended well:) At the end of it all, we managed to get away to Hawaii for ten days. All these things kept me away from blogging! I have missed you all and I am happy to be back :)

The Big Island of Hawaii is like a lesson in Geography :) It's as if my text book came alive. The diverse topography is mind boggling. Every inch of this island is picture perfect. Far, far away from the urban sprawl that we live in, this primarily rural island has the spectacular beaches and it's very own cowboy culture. There are also intriguing farmers’ markets and tropical rain forests. The beaches have myriad hues. The sand is green, black, and even white in some places. The eastern shore of the island has the magnificent Kilauea pouring hot magma into the Pacific ocean at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The northwestern side is cowboy country. I wish I could ride like like a real paniolo
( Hawaiian cowboy) in the green pastures that seems to roll down into the sea near Waimea.
The Big Island's claims to fame are quite a few! It boasts the two tallest mountain peaks in the world if you measure it from the sea bottom. It is also home to the the world’s most active volcano (Kilauea) which has been erupting since 1983.  Additionally, the southernmost tip in the United States (Ka Lae) is situated here. The island is also home to the the most powerful telescopes in the world (at W.M. Keck Observatory).

i have an ongoing love affair with the Hawaiian islands! I hold the Big Island close to my heart as it's the first island that I visited 14 years ago. It was wonderful to be back there last month with my kids! Variety is the spice of life on the Big Island. A stark landscape with black sand beaches lie on one side of the island and rain forests and jungles cover the other side! This dreamy island lures you to explore the outdoors and awakens your adventurous spirit.......... At the same time it's lazy and laid back lifestyle tempts you to slow down and do absolutely nothing :)

My daughter's excitement on spotting a sea turtle by the beach and my son swimming out into the ocean with his father shall remain etched in my mind forever! On this not so little island, time stood still. We laughed, we shared, and we came together as a family. There was no agenda and we simply enjoyed being together! It was therapeutic for me after a crazy few months at home!

I wanted to hang up my hat and set up shop in the funky Holualoa village which  straddles the fertile slopes rising up to Mauna Loa. The heart of the Kona coffee district, it is now a laid back artists’ community where cafes serve Kona coffee and art galleries beckon you to step in.

The island life makes me want to dance, twirl, and sing happy songs :) After my 6 trips to the Hawaiian islands, I can confidently say that it's my happy place outside of home :)

The bumpy ride and hike to the Green Sands beach!

I take My Dream Canvas with me everywhere :)

The Mountains Beckon

Good Morning All! Its a new week and an exciting one at My Dream Canvas. I am sharing a quote I recently read, " Travelling is something that leaves you speechless and turns you into a storyteller."

Fall has come to my neck of the woods. Sunday was a picture perfect Autumn day and we drove up into the mountains. We reached in the afternoon and the sun was shining on the mountainside. The light made everything look magical as it shone on the huckleberries. The crimson hues against the  backdrop of the evergreen trees made it all so dramatic!

These quick trips away from the realities of everyday life always recharges me!

I am thrilled with the response to the Festive Collection at my online store. I am also working on an "MDC Antique Bazaar" and will share the details with you shortly. I can promise that it will be interesting and exciting!!

Have a good week and keep on smiling :)

Postcards From English Tea Rooms

Come travel with me to England today. I am sharing postcards of the various tea rooms I visited during my trip! My love for tea is well known to everyone by now :) Most of you share that passion, so you can imagine my joy in savoring a cup of tea in a pretty little English tea room :)

I am not too fond of sweets and yet  fruit scones became my weakness on the trip. A wee bit of clotted cream and jam with the scone and I was in heaven :) I took this picture of a small tearoom cum antique store in Staithes, England.
( Yes you heard that right ) Staithes is a small seaside village which is off the beaten path. This tea room was the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea! I felt I had stepped into  a different era as I sat there with my family. From the decor, to the tea.... to the best scones I have ever had, this place is truly memorable!

The image below is from at a fancy tea room in York.  The exterior of this tea room has been used in a scene in Downtown Abbey! We stumbled upon it quite by accident. Imagine our excitement :) I remember trying to get my kids to behave as we sat down for some fancy tea :) It was all so charming and elegant. Betty's tea room make their own chocolate. I am sure the chocolates were divine but I was in love with the covers on the chocolate boxes :)

The yummy macaroons..... my daughter had a hard time walking away :)

Another picture of the boxes on display!

I hope you have enjoyed these tea rooms. There are many more pictures and many more stories so stay tuned :)

The Dream Canvas" Dream House "

Hey, I love my current house, don't get me wrong! My little casa has everything I need and more. Especially the people who live in it :) However, every now and then, you stumble upon a place that makes you sigh and daydream. Well, I spotted one such home, high up in a valley in the Dolomite's region of Italy! Can you blame me???

I wonder where do the people who live here go on vacation....perhaps to the beach!! The breathtaking views of the limestone Alps, the alpine valley below....dotted with wildflowers and little cottages, the sound of  cowbells, and the simple beauty of living with nature had me completely swept away!

So what do u think, do you like my new dream home? Lets get talking....what's on your list for a dream home?? Come on....lets daydream together shall we :)

Postcards From Tuscany

Hello there! We are now in Tuscany! Despite my promises to blog regularly, I have failed :) What can I say, Italy has captured my heart once again. I am busy savoring each moment and each frame in my mind! For now, here are some postcards from our travels. I promise detailed posts once I am back! This is the stunning Agritourismo that we are staying at close close to the hill town of Volterra. Its picture perfect here. We have a apartment in a villa overlooking vineyards and a lovely pool. The owners are fantastic. For me, its been a dream come true :)

We are not big on conducted tours. We have therefore, rented a car and are driving all around the countryside!!

Hope you all are doing well? Keep on smiling and enjoy the week ahead!

Leavenworth : A Mountain Getaway

My Summer diary continues with a few pictures of the pretty town of Leavenworth. The town is nestled in the Cascade mountains a few hours away from home. I have been there numerous times but this trip was extra special. The weather was perfect. The sun was shining through and suddenly the clouds moved in and it began raining! Mother nature put on quite a display!

A picture of my son and the pretty flowering baskets that filled every corner and lamp post around town!

Look carefully.....its raining :)

The clouds looming large over town..........

The pretty shops that were Oh! so tempting :) Both inside and out!!
